HPN Explores New Insurance Solutions for the Affordable Housing Sector
Rising insurance costs, coverage disruptions, and a shrinking number of carriers are creating significant challenges for affordable housing owners nationwide. In response, the Housing Partnership Network (HPN) is exploring whether a sector‑driven insurance solution could better meet the needs of nonprofit affordable housing organizations.
HPN brings deep experience to this exploration through the Housing Partnership Insurance Exchange (HPIEx), a member‑driven insurance model launched in 2004 to serve affordable housing organizations. HPIEx provides members with competitive deductibles, rates based upon individual performance, full portfolio coverage, and overall coverage broader than the traditional insurance market.
Building on this foundation, HPN is now seeking input from leaders across the field to assess whether a broader insurance solution supporting nonprofit organizations beyond HPN’s membership could deliver meaningful value to the sector.
As part of this effort, HPN is inviting nonprofit affordable housing organizations to participate in a short survey designed to gather insights on:
- How current insurance challenges are affecting organizations and their portfolios
- Whether a new approach to affordable housing insurance could improve outcomes
- Which organizational and portfolio characteristics should guide future analysis and design
