Community Housing Initiatives was founded in 1993 to develop affordable housing throughout Iowa. CHI focused exclusively on development and management of multifamily rental housing until 2005, when it began implementation of a homeownership program involving both development and education/counseling. CHI was created by Upper Des Moines Opportunity, a CAP agency in northwest Iowa. With nearly 1000 rental homes developed (evenly divided between rehab and new construction), CHI has become a major player in the creation of housing for lower-income households in Iowa and is the largest housing nonprofit in the state. CHI also manages more than 1000 affordable apartments, has an expanding interest in supportive housing and preservation, and is very experienced in historic rehabs and adaptive reuse of older buildings.
